Project description

The amount of computer-based technology in the NHS is increasing, with mobile devices and new software already being introduced into a range of settings. At the same time, innovative hardware platforms such as the Motion C5 tablet and tabletop computers are emerging and these have the potential to significantly impact the interaction between clinician and patient. Talk and gesture are inextricably embedded in the physical environment and previous research points to how technology can become a resource for producing actions, such as pointing to and referring to objects on the screen, and for making sense of each other's conduct. Previous studies have highlighted the coordination of clinicians "computer use and patients" actions but what has not been explored is how this coordination and communication is impacted by different hardware platforms. A small scale experimental study to investigate the impact of tablet PCs and tabletop computers will be conducted.
