Civil Engineering, Stefan Marsenic

Stefan Marsenic is currently on a one-year Highways & Transportation industrial placement with AECOM.

Since joining AECOM five months ago I have settled in very well and I am grateful for being part of a great team who are ambitious and willing to help develop my skills and knowledge.

In my first week I was briefed on the new Metro service being built in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and asked to check outfall directions, existing locations and chainages of the drainage system of an entire line on the network.

Soon after I was assigned to help out on a bid to upgrade the Lyminster Bypass and the A259. I helped evaluate a feasibility study on the benefits and effects of undertaking the project and contributed to a risk register document to evaluate all the risks to AECOM & the contractor if we were to win the project.

Then I was seconded to work on a joint venture with Colas, Volker Highways & URS (CVU) to deliver the Central London Highways Alliance Contract (LoHAC) for TfL. The work was very fast-paced with short deadlines to meet. I worked on traffic management and road and footway improvements. I liaised with contractors, observed the works occur on site and developed better negotiation and problem solving skills. This experience was extremely rewarding as it gave me experience on the contracting side of civil engineering.

Southwark Council have now invited me to work in their Highways and Parking team in a graduate engineer role even though I am still a student. I have been given the privilege of project managing the analysis and implementation of a controlled parking zone in the Elephant & Castle area. I expect this process to take between 6-8 months. It will involve a public consultation and presentation to the local Member of Parliament, evaluation of feedback data from all stakeholders, and use of a geographical information system (GIS) programme to plan the project before creating signs, parking bays and road markings using Auto CAD. Finally, I will be negotiating with a trusted contractor to implement the scheme.

To be able to manage my own project at such an early stage in my career will help me develop good management skills for larger scaled projects that I could be a part of later in my career.

Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed my time so far working for different types of engineering companies; AECOM, CVU & Southwark Council and I look forward to developing further until the end of my placement!
