Resources for tutors

Being a Personal Tutor

Being a Personal Tutor is complex role requiring you to be able to provide both academic and pastoral support to students.  Personal Tutors are not expected to offer students in-depth specialist support but it is very helpful if they are aware of the services available so they can signpost students appropriately.

These resources have been designed to help and support you in undertaking this role.

Services supporting students

In most cases, when helping a student with a personal problem, the main role of the personal tutor is to listen and assist the student in deciding on the next step to take which may involve signposting to specialist services.

LEaD specialist support for students

LEaD student facing services operate in a multidisciplinary framework and any student entering the system will be referred internally to appropriate services.   Additionally there are links with teams based in Student and Academic Services.

The main teams in LEaD delivering student support are:

The Learning Success Team: an interdisciplinary team co-ordinating

* Specific Learning Differences such as dyslexia
* Disability Support including long term health conditions and autistic spectrum disorders
* Academic Learning Support which is available to students at all levels of study

The Student Counselling and Mental Health Service: an interdisciplinary team consisting of

* Student Counsellors and Counselling Psychologists
* Student Mental Health specialists for students with diagnosed mental health difficulties

Representatives from these teams work closely with the Student Health Service and meet in a variety of ways with colleagues from other services

Key Messages

A student signposted by tutors to any part of the support system will subsequently be referred appropriately within and across teams to ensure that they receive the correct support

Even though it may not be possible for specialist staff to disclose personal information about students, Personal Tutors should feel confident about contacting Services for advice and guidance around about dealing with a particular situation

Academic Learning Support

becomes apparent that student may have a specific learning difficulty and also possible eating disorder

to discuss eating problems and possibly refer to GP

Dyslexia Service

screening for Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLd) and possible diagnostic assessment

Tutor has serious concerns about a student's behaviour in class

Tutor contacts:

Student Counselling Service for advice

serious cause for concern identified

Meeting arranged between:

Student / Personal Tutor / Mental Health Co-ordinator

GP Contacted and appointment arranged

Psychiatric referral made

Liaison between:

Mental Health Co-ordinator / Medical services / Academic dept

Appropriate on-course support put in place from LEaD multidisciplinary team
