PhD Title: General Aviation - The Application of Stakeholder Theory to the Regulatory Framework
School/Centre: The City Law School
Shahnaz's research focuses on the regulation of the aviation industry, in particular the general aviation industry. Her research examines the regulation of general aviation at the international level (ICAO), regional level (EU) and national level (UK). She is investigating the extent of stakeholders' involvement in the regulation of general aviation. She is supervised by Prof Jason Chuah and Dr Steven Truxal.
Prior to her pursuing the PhD programme at The City Law School, Shahnaz worked as a Senior Federal Counsel at the International Affairs Division of the Attorney General Chambers of Malaysia. Here, she was mainly involved in the areas of environmental law, space law and private international law. At the Advisory Division of the Attorney General Chambers of Malaysia she held the posts of Legal Advisor at the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia and Senior Federal Counsel at the Ministry of Health Malaysia.
In 2006, Shahnaz was awarded a British Chevening Scholarship to pursue her LLM masters programme at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London where she graduated with an LLM (Islamic Law) with merit in 2007.
Shahnaz, before pursuing her LLM masters programme, was attached as Federal Counsel to several ministries and departments in Malaysia. Amongst them were the Advisory Division and the International Affairs Division of the Attorney General's Chambers of Malaysia and the Ministry of Works Malaysia.
Shahnaz's experience with the Attorney General's Chambers of Malaysia has led her to represent Malaysia in various international meetings and conferences, which has exposed her to various areas of the law including to the legal aspects of the civil aviation industry in Malaysia.
Previously Shahnaz practised as an advocate and solicitor at the law firm Messrs Kadir Tan and Ramli in Kuala Lumpur. Shahnaz was admitted as an advocate and solicitor at the High Court of Malaya in 1996. She studied for her undergraduate degree at the MARA Institute of Technology in Malaysia. She also holds a Diploma in Public Administration from the same institute.
Shahnaz undertook an internship at the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in Montreal, Canada in November 2012. During her internship she was assigned to the Legal and External Affairs Bureau. The internship allowed Shahnaz the opportunity to experience the workings of the ICAO directly, which in turn has contributed to her research.
