International Law and the Use of Force
This module explores the international legal framework regulating the use of force in international relations. It focuses on the prohibition of resort to force found in Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and the exceptions to that prohibition, particularly self-defence (Article 51). It also looks at controversial issues such as humanitarian intervention and intervention to promote democracy. Students taking this module will develop a substantial and critical understanding of the legal regime that governs the use of force under international law.
