David Emmet

David Emmet BA, Barrister, Senior Lecturer

David was called to the Bar in 1973. After pupillage at 3 Pump Court, he joined the Inns of Court School of Law in 1974, and has taught there continuously since.  He was in turn a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Principal Lecturer and from 1986 a Permanent Reader.  He was one of the architects of the Bar Vocational Course (the first ever skills-based training for lawyers in the UK) and took charge of the creation of the programme of Practical Training Exercises.  He was director of learning resources until 1999, having overall responsibility for the development and maintenance of BVC course materials.

His main teaching areas were Opinion Writing, Drafting and Remedies.  He is the author and editor of the Drafting Manual, and the author of substantial portions of the Opinion Writing and Remedies Manuals, published by Oxford University Press.

David’s work started to expand into CPD in about 1991, and since then he has increasingly specialised in this area, working full time in the CPD Department.  His specialist areas are the drafting of pleadings, remedies, opinion writing and general writing skills (including plain English), and he designs and delivers courses in all these areas. He is also the author of many substantial case studies, including that used on the Law School's Higher Rights programme, for which he won an award for excellence in curriculum design from City.

David trains tax practitioners as well as lawyers.  He played a major role in devising the Certificate in Advanced Research and Communication Skills for Tax Practitioners course, which he has been delivering to firms of tax accountants. He also teaches legal skills to tax students.
