Student Life

Aside from life at City, there are numerous ways to make the most of life in London and the UK. Below are some useful organisations designed to help you settle in and enjoy your time here.

International Students House

International Students House (ISH) is a student residence and a unique social, cultural and recreational centre. ISH is a charity founded in 1965 with the sole aim of improving international understanding and friendship. City, University of London is now a member of ISH, which entitles all of our students to use the services and facilities at ISH and attend the free events that take place. To gain access to ISH you will simply need to show your City student ID card upon arrival.

ISH offers the following services:

  • A low cost bar where you can meet other  students.
  • A welfare service: you can book an appointment to visit the welfare officer at ISH.
  • The Theater Club: You can buy discounted tickets for trips to the Theatre from the Events Office at ISH.
  • The Travel Club: This club offers discounted trips to destinations in the UK and Europe.
  • Free Sunday Cinema: Every Sunday at 19:30 ISH shows a new film. No need to book.
  • Free Sunday table tennis: Every Sunday afternoon at ISH they play table tennis. All levels are welcome.
  • Free to attend events: ISH organises a range of events throughout the whole year.
  • Access to the ISH fitness studio: There is a fee for classes.

UK Council for International Student Affairs

The UK Council for International Student Affairs (UKCISA) is the UK's national advisory body serving the interests of international students. UKCISA provides very useful information and advice on student immigration, living and studying in the UK, including guides on Choosing Accommodation, Driving in the UK, Keeping Healthy and Council Tax. HOST UK

HOST promotes international friendship and understanding by arranging for international students at British universities to meet UK residents in their homes. You can apply to stay with a British family to meet new friends, practice your English, share your culture and enjoy the amazing home-cooked food. The visit is free but you will need to pay an application fee of £60 for a weekend visit. Please read the information and advice on HOST website before you apply online.

British Council

At British Council Education UK, you can do a search for courses, institutions and scholarships based on different criteria such as subject and location. You will also find more practical advice about living and studying in the UK, including Pre-departure, Safety First, Creating Confidence and Cultural Connections guides.

International Student Calculator

International Student Calculator

The international student calculator website has been developed by Brightside, an independent education charity. They aim to help students prepare for the financial side of UK higher education. Their website provides international students with an interactive guide to living costs, as well as useful information and student profiles.

Prepare for Success

Prepare for Success is an interactive web learning tool for international students who are getting ready to come to the UK for study in further or higher education. Their website contains learning resources which are activity-based to help you find out about different aspects of academic life in the UK and the skills needed for effective study.

International Organisation for Migration

International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is the world's leading intergovernmental organisation in the field of migration. IOM UK offers concessional airfares to students. International students and their dependants returning permanently to their home country once they have finished their studies could apply for special discounted one-way economy fare with generous baggage allowance and flexible conditions.
