Crabb Lab Consultancy
The Crabb Lab is a hub of innovation in interdisciplinary health research, focussed on improving ocular healthcare for the future. We relate stages of chronic eye disease and subsequent visual disability to everyday life. We design new tests for visual disorders, develop software to support clinical decisions and use ‘big data’ to assess the delivery of health services to patients with age related eye disease. Below you will find details of some of the consultancy projects that have been generated using the innovative expertise of the Crabb Lab:
One of our most recent innovative consultancy projects involved developing an app. This was a glaucoma progression simulation app for use by physicians and patients and the work involved doing a detailed brief scope review and project plan, sourcing glaucoma photographs for the app library, adding progressions to all photos, plus the development of statistical algorithms to do interactive visual fields. Further enhancements are being scoped and costed separately following initial delivery, including an interactive hazard perception test, drop administration videos and ‘how to’s’, daily adherence calendar/alert system and patient disease information.
Large Scale consultancy with an International company
The projects were all related to Glaucoma and included:
A marketing project involving the production of three 5-10 second glaucoma progression animations and a glaucoma eyetracker video using an internationally-known movie without copyright restrictions for showing at an international conference.
The team also attended the conference and manned an ‘eyetracker glaucoma experience booth’. It included the provision of consultancy advice/recommendations on various content within 2014 iPad promotional material to depict visual field loss blurs on photos provided and the production of visual field maps and relevant images related to driving and face recognition.
Restricted visual fields and eye movements:
In collaboration with a USA based lab in California, Professor Crabb and his team helped examine the hypothesis that restricted visual fields precipitate abnormal eye movements in non-human primate eyes. This simulated glaucomatous field damage to compare with normal eye movement and asked the question: “Do eyes of monkeys with restricted visual fields (simulating glaucomatous field damage) exhibit larger saccades and increases in timing on eye movement tests compared with normal eyes?”
The task was to provide the following services:
- Provide a critical review of experimental protocol
- Provide a critical review of data analysis used in Wheeler lab
- Crabb Lab also provided an independent exploratory analysis of the data from the experiments.
- There were various site visits to the lab in California included.
The next project informed an educational programme for the client. As one of five authors, our academics produced a slide kit to use at different educational meetings in Europe and Asia, hosted or supported by the contracting organisation. Again, this was glaucoma focussed and included input to a module on the programme called, “What does it mean to have glaucoma” and specifically a module called, “Glaucoma through the eyes of the patients.”
This discussed the burden of glaucoma and what it means for the patient, presented the new City eye tracking system to simulate VF defects, gave the clinician audience a perspective of what VF defects might be like. Films such as the 007 film were used to illustrate the difficulty a glaucoma patient might have in daily life.An interactive film was created with the questions and covered discussions around “tunnel vision” (eg. how does a glaucoma patient really see).
