The Department of Music is delighted to welcome Professor Joanna MacGregor, CBE, to the university for the third in the Department’s Distinguished Lecture Series, following Michael Nyman's lecture in 2018 and Chi-chi Nwanoku in 2019.

The lecture will be followed by refreshments for all guests. Please book a place in advance.

Joanna MacGregor

Joanna MacGregor is one of the world’s most innovative musicians, appearing as a concert pianist, curator and collaborator. Head of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music and Professor of the University of London, Joanna is also known as an artistic director of festivals and concerts series, including Bath International Music Festival and Dartington International Summer School.

Joanna MacGregor As a solo artist Joanna has performed in over 80 countries and appeared with many eminent conductors—Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Valery Gergiev, Sir Simon Rattle and Michael Tilson Thomas amongst them—and orchestras including the London, Berlin and Sydney Symphony Orchestras; the Chicago and Melbourne Symphony and Oslo Philharmonic Orchestras and the Salzburg Camerata. Last season, she performed Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony with the Auckland Philharmonia, and Gershwin’s Concerto in F with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

Joanna has premiered many landmark compositions by composers ranging from Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Django Bates to John Adams and James MacMillan. She performs regularly at major venues throughout the world, including the Wigmore Hall, Southbank Centre and Barbican in London, the Sydney Opera House, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

The 2019/20 season will see Joanna perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and she will give recitals at Wigmore Hall, St. George’s Bristol, Turner Sims Southampton, Perth Concert Hall, Theater aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht, Hebden Bridge Piano Festival, Mayfield Festival and at the Shaldon Festival. She will also revive her collaboration with Saxophonist Andy Sheppard for a concert in Bucharest in spring 2020.
