The student singers of Civitas, City’s specialist early vocal ensemble, mark the season of Lent with a programme of English, Greek, Latin and Slavonic chants and early polyphony. The concert begins with penitential and Marian hymns from Northern Italy, Russia, and Byzantium, including works by the 9th-century Abbess Kassía. The story of Mary at the Cross of Jesus on Good Friday is then related from three different musical and linguistic perspectives before the programme concludes with a movement of Ukrainian composer Dmitri Bortnyansky’s Divine Liturgy for Three Voices.
Civitas is led by Professor Alexander Lingas, also known internationally as the founding Musical Director of the professional vocal ensemble Cappella Romana.
