Join us for an afternoon of online seasonal activities to help you reconnect and get together with colleagues across City.

Workshops and Activities -  Wednesday 16th December 2020

You will need to sign up to take part to receive joining details. The Calendar request will be sent to you prior to the event.

12pm – 12.55pm: Sustainable gift wrapping and decorations, with Emma Boylan
Join Emma as she shows you some ways to make use of last year’s Christmas cards, fabric scraps (or charity shop finds) and some food from your kitchen to create beautiful gift wrap for presents. We will cover how to make fabric twine and other decorations to dress up some paper wrapping, as well as how to use fabric or scarves to wrap presents.
This is also an opportunity for us all to share ways we can reduce waste at Christmas so please feel free to share your own ideas. Instructions and links will be available after the session.

12.30pm – 1pm: Mindfulness drop-in with City’s Centre for Excellence in Mindfulness Research (CEMR)
Join the CEMR’s mindfulness team for half an hour of facilitated mindfulness practice – making space for community, friendly smiles and self-care before the winter break. Contact Jutta Tobias-Mortlock ( to receive the joining details for this session.

1pm – 1.55pm: Make your own beaded icicle tree decoration, with Kathryn Drumm
Join Kathryn as she shows you how to make a beaded icicle, which you can use as a decoration on your tree or make it as a gift for others. The decoration uses a simple bead threading technique which is suitable for beginners.
You can view a list of materials if you would like to purchase these ahead of the workshop. A reminder of the materials and of the pattern will be available after the session.

2pm – 2.55pm: Beginners Christmas biscuit icing, with Emily Lupton
Emily will take you through simple festive biscuit icing – how to shape your biscuits, make your icing and pipe decorations.
Emily will demonstrate a couple of biscuit shapes that you can do without cutters, so if you are making your own biscuit dough you could reserve some to shape along with Emily during the session, or afterwards.
If you would like to ice your biscuits during the session, you will need:

  • Biscuits – buy ready-made biscuits to ice, or follow pdf to bake Honey Jumbles, a semi-spiced soft biscuit
  • Icing – follow pdf  for Royal icing, or another alternative
  • Piping bag and nozzle, or plastic food bag

3pm – 3.55pm: Ancient winter traditions: Art workshop, with David Ross
(Suitable for children too – so feel free to get any little artists involved!)Imagine and create your own art inspired by the ancient origins of Winter traditions, and the worship of nature, stars, the sun, the moon – and even ladybirds!
Winter is the time of year when we yearn for green plants, blossoms and the light of the sun. This workshop will help you embrace your inner child of the forest and allow your drawing to morph into the strange and the imaginative.
Join the workshop with:

  • 4-5 sheets of paper
  • Pencils, colouring pens – anything you have to draw with
  • Any organic objects, plants, leaves, fruit
  • Images or objects from nature (optional)
