Applied data science in the wild: data science as a career

6.00pm

Seminars

Staff, Students, Academics

Series: Data Bites

Speaker: Peter Simon (DataRobot)

Abstract:

So you want to be a data scientist?  Congratulations, that's an excellent career decision. In this session, we'll look at data science as a career, touching on how the role of the data scientist is evolving rapidly, what skills you'll need to succeed, and what they don't teach you at "data science school".  We'll also discuss some current hot topics in applied data science (data science as it's practiced in business and industry): interpretability and automated machine learning.

Bio:

Peter graduated from City's MSc in Data Science in 2017 and leads the financial markets data science practice at DataRobot. He works closely with banking, fintech, and asset management clients on numerous high-ROI use cases for DataRobot’s industry-leading automated machine learning platform.  Before DataRobot, Peter gained over twenty years’ experience in senior quantitative research, portfolio management, trading, risk management and data science roles at investment banks and asset managers including Morgan Stanley, Warburg Pincus, Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, Lansdowne Partners and Invesco, as well as spending several years as a partner at a start-up global equities hedge fund.  His paper (co-authored with Cagatay Turkay), “Hunting High and Low: Visualising Shifting Correlations in Financial Markets”, was published in the July 2018 issue of Computer Graphics Forum.
