Podcast Hosts: Dr Glenda Cooper and Dr Lindsey Blumell
Part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2019
What’s it like to leave your country and profession and try to start all over again? How do you do this – when your new country’s media is often hostile to those seeking asylum? Our event aims to give such refugees to have a voice.
You are invited to be part of the audience in a live recording of the City University podcast, the Knowhow (blogs.city.ac.uk/theknowhowpodcast) which brings academics and the public together to debate pressing matters of the day.
In this special recording of the podcast for the ESRC Festival of Social Science we will be talking to refugees about their experience, with academics who have studied this.
The event will draw on current research into how asylum seekers are portrayed in the UK media comparing and contrasting print and online coverage (Blumell, Bunce, Cooper, forthcoming).
But we want to use the accessible medium of a live recording event to allow you to hear real voices telling their stories, which may challenge preconceptions about how we see those who have been forced to leave their homes
It will also be then uploaded on to iTunes, Spotify and Soundcloud to ensure it reaches a wider audience.
