City Balkan Ensemble: Lunchtime Concert

The City Balkan Ensemble, led by violinist and singer Gundula Gruen, is an inspired group of music students from City, University of London. For authenticity, the group is taught by ear. Romantic melodies from Hungary, the compound rhythms of Bulgaria, vibrant harmonies from Macedonia: the repertoire is a colourful and charismatic mix, which leads the audience on a musical East-West journey across Europe.

Since October 2018, we have been working intensely on music from Eastern Europe and the Balkans, from folk and Romani traditions. The ensemble had its debut performance at Christmas 2018, showing off a vibrant taster of our repertoire. Recently, at the City International Week, we led students, staff and our Vice-President Professor Stanton Newman in dance. In this concert, the ensemble will perform their full repertoire of traditional songs and pieces, arranged for this special line-up, and performed with the skill and the zest of 10 engaged musicians.
