Violinist and ethnomusicologist Gundula Gruen presents a lunchtime lecture recital on the subject of Čoček, a Macedonian Romani music and dance form. Gundula will explore the complex meaning of the genre, performing examples with Jeremy Halliwell (guitar) and Sass Hoory (percussion), members of her group Tatcho Drom.
Gundula completed undergraduate study in classical violin, and a postgraduate course in jazz, before dedicating herself to the music of Eastern European and Balkan Romani traditions. For the last 20 years she has collected folk music and researched the culture of many regions. This lecture recital is the last part of her MA course in ethnomusicology at City, University of London.
