Free Language Courses
The Centre for Language Studies is offering free language courses. All students and staff at City are eligible to apply.** The courses are designed to develop and improve your language competencies from beginner level up to advanced. Drop in to the Language Fair to find out more about the courses and to register your interest by filling in an online registration form. If you have prior knowledge in the language you want to study, you will also have the opportunity to sit an online placement test at the fair which will help us to place you in the correct level class.
The language courses are for general purposes, designed for you to learn Arabic, French, German, Mandarin and Spanish in the context of day-to-day life in these five languages. If you successfully complete the course, you will be given a language certificate from the University but the language options do not count towards your degree.
Information about the courses:
- Arabic and Mandarin are taught at Beginner level
- French, German, Spanish are taught at Beginner, Lower & Upper Intermediate and Advanced levels
- Four skills are trained and developed: speaking, listening, reading and writing comprehension
- The studied topics are related to the world of day-to-day life of the target country
- Work on language structure to be able to do presentations, orally or in a written format
- Cultural knowledge related to the target language
Registration of interest and (if necessary) online placement tests - to assess your level of competence so that you can study your target language at the right level - will take place at the Language Fair. This runs for two days:
Thursday 20th and Friday 21th September in room A109 (College Building, first floor) 11am - 4pm
These are drop-in session and you may take the test on either of those days at any time. Please bring your University log-in and password to the fair.
Please be reminded that this test is not an examination; it is only designed to find your level of linguistic competence at this point in time for class allocation purposes.
If you can’t make it to the fair, you can register your interest/ take the test remotely. A link to the instructions will be published on our Centre for Language Studies web pages. If you need assistance, contact us on languages@city.ac.uk. The deadline is 24th September 2018, 5pm.
**All City students and staff may apply to take this free-standing module at no extra cost but note that these courses are very popular (particularly the Beginner levels) and spaces are limited – not all applicants may be accommodated. We award spaces at random to the applications received.
