Speaker: Joe Steer

Abstract

This talk will aim to give an insight into how data science is used at comparethemarket, one of the UK’s most loved price comparison websites. It will explain where data science sits within the broader business, as well as looking in detail at some of the projects that the team has worked on recently and how they have helped comparethemarket provide a better experience to their customers. The talk will also offer a personal perspective on some of the lessons that Joe has learnt when transferring the skills that he learnt on the City data science programme into a commercial environment.

Joe previously led the research team at the British Venture Capital Association, and before that was a civil servant at both HM Treasury and the Cabinet Office. He is an alumnus of the MSc data science programme at City, having graduated in 2017 with a dissertation that focused on recursively combining neural networks with fibring functions.
