City University London's African Caribbean Society presents The Great Debate Tour 2013.
In 2010, Elevation Networks and Young, Black and Successful CIC partnered to deliver the largest debate tour that engages black and ethnic minority students on campuses all over the UK. Since then, they have engaged over 10,000 students and young people in thought-provoking and entertaining debate. Last year they ended The Great Debate Tour with a live finale in Parliament, which was covered and aired on Sky TV by Vox Africa.
Why the Great Debate?
Ethnic minority members of the UK population are historically less likely to vote, and less likely to be active within areas of public life. In addition to this, particular segments of the ethnic minority population are disproportionately unemployed and engaged in the criminal justice system. We believe that to change the current negative stereotypes and outcomes, the next generation of leaders must be inspired to get actively involved in matters that are closest to their communities. They must be the change that they wish to see in their respective environments, and a debate helps to start of the conversation.
As well as entertaining, the Great Debate Tour is empowering and informative with over 90% of previous attendees feeling more enlightened on issues of public life after a debate. It is a forum where students' voices are heard in a truly dynamic way, and new insight is provided to all through mass conversation and discussion.
