Measurement is an enabling component in virtually all fields of research and wealth creation. It underpins diagnostics in healthcare, the minimisation of pollution, the efficient utilisation of energy, early detection and forensic analysis of events for security and defence, transport efficiency, industrial processes - in fact all those aspects that comprise a sustainable economy. And yet it remains largely a hidden technology because it is, in the main, embedded - 'inside' products and processes.
