Campaigning Journalism
Speaker: Nicholas Jones - former BBC Correspondent
Series: Sociology Guest Speaker Series
This presentation will focus on the importance of campaigning journalism, something very much part and parcel of the British press, and obviously the question of whether this great tradition is at risk post-Leveson.
The main point of the seminar would be to explain campaigning journalism, illustrate remarks with front pages, explain why such campaigns can change government decisions, and point to some of the more uncomfortable campaigns (e.g. Daily Mail against the burqa, or Daily Express against gipsies etc.). The conclusion is that campaigning journalism will continue, but it is not in the rude health it once was. It is definitely worth encouraging, an example of the vibrancy of the British press we risk losing at our peril.
