In this presentation Laura Matthews will look at some of the evidence about people with hearing loss in the workplace. In particular she will talk about the latest Action on Hearing Loss report on employment called Unlimited Potential. This research looked at the experiences of people who lost their hearing whilst of working age. What support did they receive from their workplace and other sources, if any, and what support would they have wanted? With increases to pension and retirement ages, the number of people with hearing loss in the UK workplace will increase. It is therefore becoming increasingly important that we understand now the challenges to be faced, and what solutions can enable people who develop hearing loss to remain in the workplace.
Laura joined Action on Hearing Loss 5 years ago when it was called RNID, the Royal National Institute for Deaf people. During her time with the charity she has published numerous research reports including Seen but not Heard, examining peoples' experiences of accessing audiology and rehabilitation services. More recently she published Unlimited Potential, looking at the experiences of people who lose their hearing whilst of working age. Laura has also been involved with Action on Hearing Loss's annual survey, a questionnaire sent to 20,000 members, with a response rate of around 7,000. Laura's role also involves policy work and she is currently trying to influence the government to increase the availability of subtitles on television. Prior to working in the hearing loss field, Laura worked in local government and for a homeless charity.
