Only Connect: cultural indivisibility and academic interdisciplinarity in text, sound and image.
Amanda Hopkinson, Literary Translation, University of East Anglia
Popular culture has long been differentiated from mass culture in that it arises locally rather than being imposed by a globalised media. Yet, despite its connection to often longstanding tradition, popular culture has a vital capacity to absorb and transform external influences. Drawing particularly on Latin American and Middle Eastern examples, this lecture will illustrate how interdisciplinarity of practice relates to the growing inter-relationship between the verbal, musical and the visual.
