Demystifying the City and financial markets

The financial markets can seem complex and forbidding - especially when you're training to be a lawyer who may end up working for a City law firm. Chris Stoakes is himself a lawyer and the author of the best-selling guide All You Need To Know About The City. In this talk he will set out the two frameworks that help him understand who people in the City are and what they do. He will explain the role of equity and debt, the role of the Stock Exchange, what an investment bank does and the role of institutional investors. If you feel you know nothing about the City but are too scared to ask, this is the talk for you.

Chris Stoakes is the director of knowledge management and technical training at global law firm Hogan Lovells International LLP. He read law at Oxford, qualified at Freshfields then became a financial journalist and editor at Euromoney where he edited International Financial Law Review and Global Investor. He has also written for the Financial Times, the Times and the Independent. He was the BD partner at Stephenson Harwood and taught for 10 years on the MBA for lawyers at Nottingham Law School. He has also been a management consultant, advising law firms on marketing and strategy, and a trainer, specialising in commercial awareness and effective business writing. He is the author of a number of successful titles in the All You Need To Know series published by Longtail, including books on the City, the global financial markets and commercial awareness.
