Specialist In-House Mental Health Mentoring

Learn about in-house mental health mentoring support and how we can help you.

At City, University of London we are committed to supporting students with mental health conditions to help them to overcome any additional challenges to learning they may face and enable them to participate fully in university life.  For this reason, we have a specialist team dedicated to providing in-house mental health mentoring, advice and guidance who can help you to navigate City specific systems and processes, act as an on-campus point of contact and meet your unique needs as a member of our student community. 

Below you will find a guide to specialist, individual mental health mentoring.  If you would like to access support through our service and are applying for or currently receive Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs) , speak to your provider funding your DSA (e.g. Student Finance England or NHS Student Bursaries) or needs assessor. What is specialist mental health mentoring?

Specialist mental health mentoring is tailored support designed to meet your unique needs.  In-house mentoring is provided by our specialist team, all of whom have a professional mental health qualification, experience in the field of mental health and higher education and have in-depth knowledge of processes and services here at City, University of London.  Further information about our team members can be found here .

Mentoring does not replace the support you should receive through the NHS or other health care providers but aims to help you to overcome or reduce any additional challenges you may experience as a result of your mental health condition(s) whilst studying for your university degree.  This might include providing practical and emotional support around the following:

  • Support to manage changes and transitions e.g. starting at a new university or moving city
  • Development of strategies for independent learning in the context of your mental health condition e.g. improving concentration and time management
  • Development of strategies to improve and better manage wellbeing and prevent relapse
  • Monitoring of signs and symptoms of becoming unwell
  • Support to improve social relationships and interactions
  • Support to improve communication skills
  • Sign post to other internal and external support services as appropriate
  • Support to manage transition into the workplace

It is important to be clear that mentoring is not counselling or study skills tuition although these services are offered at City. Responsibility for your mental health care is held by your G.P. or specialist mental health team.  For more information please contact us.

How do I access in-house mentoring?

  1. Apply for Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs).

    Not eligible for DSAs? Please visit our Additional Financial Support webpages or contact us.

  2. Attend a needs assessment to determine eligibility and number of mentoring hours.

    DSA funded mentoring – If you are awarded mentoring through DSA you will be allocated a specific number of hours.  You can use as much or as little of this as you like.  If you wish to receive mentoring through our in-house service you will need to request this during your needs assessment or contact your needs assessor following your appointment to arrange an amendment.  If you do not specifically request mentoring with our service you may be allocated support through an external agency or independent practitioner.

    You will need to send us a copy of your needs assessment and attend a registration appointment in order to set up mentoring.

    Non-DSA funded mentoring – Number and frequency of mentoring hours will be agreed during your in-house needs assessment completed as part of our registration process.  Mentoring funded by City, University of London will be provided by our in-house service.

  3. Agree with your mentor whether you would like regular sessions or to book appointment as and when needed.  The frequency of appointments can be renegotiated at any time.

    Please note that as a result of the demands on our service there might be a slight delay to finding appointments that match your availability or to finding a regular appointment when booked later in the semester.

  4. Book appointments by calling our service front desk on 020 7040 8094.
  5. All appointments are delivered face-to-face on a one-to-one basis at our Northampton Square campus during normal office hours. Telephone and skype appointments can only be offered where specified in your needs assessment.

How does it work?

  1. During your initial appointments, you will work with your mentor to establish the goals you wish to work towards.
  2. You will be required to sign a timesheet at the end of each session or following each cancelled or missed appointment for funding purposes.  This also helps us keep track of the support that you have been provided to ensure that we do not exceed your recommended mentoring hours.
  3. Your mentor will regularly review with you how things are going and establish any goals you would like to work towards during future mentoring sessions.

What is expected of me?

During your initial appointments your mentor will discuss this with you in more detail and you will be required to sign a Contract for Specialist Mentoring which outlines expectations for you and your mentor.

The following is a summary of key expectations, for more information please see our Policies and Procedures:

  • Actively engage in mentoring and work towards agreed goals
  • Bring any concerns or difficulties to the attention of your mentor as soon as possible
  • Book appointments in advance
  • Attend appointments on time.  For more information please see our Lateness and Cancellation Policy.
  • Sign a timesheet to confirm a session has taken place
  • Give at least 24-hours’ notice if you need to cancel an appointment
  • For any late cancellations, notify your mentor as soon as possible and provide an explanation of your absence.  You will be required to sign a timesheet for funding purposes.  For more information please see our Lateness and Cancellation Policy
  • Respond to emails in a timely manner
  • Provide feedback when requested

What if I don’t want to continue with mentoring?

I don’t feel I need mentoring anymore

There is no obligation to continue with mentoring if you feel you no longer require it however, please let your mentor know if you wish to discontinue with mentoring.

I’m not finding mentoring helpful

If you would like to pause mentoring because you are not finding the sessions helpful or are struggling to attend due to other commitments e.g. placement or family responsibilities, we ask that you speak about these concerns with your mentor to allow them to work with you to address any problems and better meet your needs if possible.  This might include taking a different approach to your support or if possible, arranging to work with an alternative mentor.  If you do not feel that your concerns are resolved following this discussion you can contact the Mental Health Co-ordinator, Lydia Pell at mentalhealth@city.ac.uk. If you would like to stop mentoring you will need to let us know so that we can advise your DSA provider.

What if I want to return to mentoring?

Should you discontinue mentoring but change your mind in the future, you can contact us at any time during your studies to discuss returning for support.

Is Mentoring Confidential?

Yes.

All personal information that you share with the Student Counselling & Mental Health Service is considered sensitive under the Data Protection Act (1998).  It will remain strictly confidential and will only be disclosed to relevant parties at your request and/or with your knowledge.  Student Counselling & Mental Health Service staff attend external supervision and meetings of the City Multidisciplinary Team, similarly bound by confidentiality.  The only exception arises where there is concern for the safety of individuals.
