City is one of the very few universities in London offering this short course, which teaches you how to automate Excel so that even very complex functions can be achieved quickly and simply.
Using a step-by-step approach, this highly popular course shows how the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) programming language can extend the functionality of Excel. It is ideal for those who work with Excel and need to manipulate and analyse data.
This practical course takes the form of a series of weekly classes that can be taken on weekday evenings or Saturday daytime, all facilitated at our Central London location.
You will learn to write macros to accept user input, read to and write from cells and manipulate data. You will also learn to write custom functions and create user forms. Useful examples of problems and their solutions are provided.
This short course is ideal for those with a good knowledge of MS Excel and would like to add additional functionality. No programming knowledge is required.

Informal assessment will take place through group discussion, class room activities, and questions and answers sessions as guided by your tutor.
Sean Walsh has over 10 years’ experience of Excel and VBA. He was a member of the Support, Training and Documentation team within City’s IT department and has an MSc in Computing Science from Birkbeck.
Sean has taught other evening classes for City such as Oracle and SQL, XML, Excel and MS Office. He has also managed an academic programme within City, University of London’s Continuing Education department.
