Course Content

These two days have been developed for staff who has started in primary care and who are required to give care to women in relation to pill checks and depo injections and who have not had training before. It will also give an overview of all methods so staff can give information, so women have understanding to enable them to give consent about the method chosen.

The day covers all methods of contraception and introduces sexual health screening in practice.

This 2 day course is also useful for anyone who has completed their contraception/ sexual course in the past and who have not practiced in this field for a while and want a full update.

Tutor Info

Val McMunn is a qualified nurse, midwife, teacher, Independent nurse prescriber and is employed as a lecturer at City, University of London in contraception, sexual health and cytology.

She holds an MSc in Public Health and a Post Graduate Certificate in Sexual health as well as being an Associate of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and has a recognised qualification from the Faculty in fitting intrauterine techniques and subdermal Implants.

She currently works clinically within contraception/sexual health services where she maintains her clinical skills and knowledge.

Her previous roles include working as an ITU nurse, school nurse, midwife both in hospital and in the community, family planning nurse, community midwife manager, manager of family planning services, Assistant Director of Midwifery and Gynaecology and has been a lecturer for 14 years.

She has published work in regard to alcohol consumption related to sexual behaviour and Chlamydia infection in young women and oropharyngeal health in relation to sexually transmitted infections linked to oral sex.

Eligibility

This 2 day course is for any registered health care staff that is required to give contraception advice/care and who have not had any formal training or require a refresher in all contraception methods.

English Requirements

Spoken English essential.

All methods are linked to the UKMEC to insure safe care

Teaching and Assessment

Different methods of teaching are used to enhance learning and these include, power point presentations, scenarios, story telling, group work and group interaction.
