This course provides an opportunity for practising Speech and Language Therapists (SLTs) to refresh their knowledge of phonetics and transcription. Although these are core aspects of SLT training, they are also skills that can be forgotten if they are not used for a period of time. The course works as a refresher for those who feel they would like to boost their basic transcription skills. It covers aspects such as voice, place and manner of consonants, vowel classification, and transcription symbols for the Southern British English speech sounds. Practical exercises are included throughout, and the course is taught in a friendly and facilitative manner, with the aim of increasing participants’ confidence in their transcription skills.

Participants will be practicing Speech and Language Therapists who would like to refresh their skills in core phonetics and transcription. Participants may be using transcription in their current role, or it may be a long time since they have had the opportunity to transcribe.

Although all participants will have knowledge of phonetics and transcription from their pre-registration training, the course will start at the very beginning to ensure a common understanding. The course will include a graded series of exercises for participants’ to test their own skills and knowledge, with the ultimate aim of increasing their confidence in their transcription skills.
