Do you want to expand your ability to support physiological labour and birth and offer personalised care?

Are you keen on enhancing your ability to implement change focused on Optimal Birth in your Maternity Unit?

City, University of London is proud to offer an innovative Summer School, designed for international midwives, obstetricians as well as other maternity care providers, which aims to enhance your confidence in supporting women to have a positive birth experience and reducing unnecessary intrapartum interventions.

The concepts of Optimum Birth and Optimal Intrapartum Care are an essential part of providing high quality care. The first focuses on how to support all women to achieve a positive birth experience, including those with conditions which might preclude them from pursuing a normal birth care pathway. The second focuses on how to support the best outcomes for mother and baby focusing on clinical outcomes, positive experiences and cost-effectiveness.

This Summer School aims to enhance and extend your ability to support the physiological birth process for all women, regardless of their ‘risk’ level enabling you to provide intrapartum care at an advanced practitioner level.

Clinical and academic experts in continuity of carer models, midwifery units, homebirth, hypnobirthing, vaginal breech birth will share knowledge and skills with participants. Specialists in implementing change and innovation in healthcare will offer students insights on how to facilitate innovation in your service.

Learning is achieved via a range of techniques including practical workshops, discussion groups (face-to-face and online), lectures, simulation, role-play and online tutorials. Students have access to a range of learning spaces including City’s state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Centre, our specialsit Technology Enabled Care Studio City TECS, computer labs and classrooms.

The team of lecturers includes experts in the field, from academics to Consultant Midwives and experts in implementation and improvement in health care settings.

On completion of the week, an evening event will be facilitated by City University where you will receive your certificate of achievement and you will have the opportunity to network with fellow students and academics.

Please note that this summer school is non-credit bearing and is not a module. There is no formal assessment.

Course outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be expected to have developed your knowledge, understanding, skills, values and attitudes.

By the end of this Summer school you will be able to:

  • Integrate techniques and skills (including non-pharmacological techniques) to support women towards achieving optimal birth.
  • Assess fetal wellbeing using intelligent intermittent auscultation
  • Proficiently manage obstetric emergencies in any clinical setting, recognising when multi-disciplinary involvement in care is appropriate
  • Combine clinical safety with sensitivity to service users’ experience and choice
  • Describe and discuss the evidence that underpin best practice and the national quality agenda.
  • Critically evaluate the ethical principles and laws underpinning your Optimal Intrapartum Care practice
  • Engage in leadership practices which will enhance your maternity services culture related to to Optimum Birth
  • Demonstrate critical awareness of the legal implications of the right to autonomy, the importance of listening to women and providing women-centred care
  • Design and implement a strategic improvement plan which can be applied in a diverse range of settings

Please note that there is no formal assessment and you will not receive any CPD credits.

Students have access to a wide range of learning spaces including City’s state-of-the-art Clinical Skills Centre, our specialist Technology Enabled Care Studio City TECS, computer labs and classrooms.

The module uses the concept of ‘flipped classroom’ which involves students to read, complete e-learning modules and reflect on their practice prior to the intensive face to face week in London.
