This course is aimed at enabling participants to recognise, assess and manage common mental health conditions in general practice. The focus of the day will be on some of the most common mental health conditions that present in general practice. These will include depression, anxiety and panic disorders, OCD, post natal depression and management of chronic mental conditions.
The day will focus briefly on QOF (Quality Outcome Framework) points and what mental health targets are mandatory to suffice in general practice. It will be a packed day combining various forms of teaching methods such as role play and FAQ interactive sessions with an experienced GP principle. We will also invite an experienced mental health practitioner to teach on severe mental illnesses; topics covered will be schizophrenia, affective disorders and a brief introduction on therapies such as CBT and the Mental Health Act.
The day will be primarily run by an experienced, advanced nurse practitioner currently in practice in a busy inner city London practice along with a GP principle and a community specialist mental health practitioner (nursing).
Lalita Lyer Goel is highly qualified and holds a BSc in Community Health, BSc Hons Nursing, BSc nursing-advanced sexual health), RGN, RHV, Independent Prescriber, MSc, PGD (Teaching), PGD diabetes care.
Applicants must be registered nurses or qualified health care professionals
Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.
What will I learn?
This exciting interactive day will inform nurses in practice to recognise clients who present with a mental health condition, and how they need to deal with this, including how to identify and manage a psychiatric emergency such as suicide and self-harm. You will further gain an insight into the realities and limitations of practice in a GP setting.
