This module provides bases for formulating basic risk decisions in quantitative terms and understanding the meaning and value of statistical and probabilistic methods for analysing risk.
The main aims of the module are to provide: an introduction to probabilistic / statistical modelling and analysis for risk assessment; an introduction to the use of a statistical computing package.
The module will be delivered in block mode consisting of two blocks as follows:
- Thursday evening: 5pm - 9pm
- Friday: 9am-5pm
- Saturday: 9am-5pm
The starting date for the first block is given in the module information below. The second block is delivered 6 weeks after the first block.
This module is taken from the MSc in Management of Information Security and Risk.
You should have a first or second class BSc honours degree (or equivalent non-UK qualification).
You should also have approximately five years of relevant professional experience (absolute minimum of two years in exceptional circumstances).
You should also have basic competence and familiarity with mathematics and good professional English.
What will I learn?
- Quantifying risk. Probabilistic models. Statistical inference
- Subjective probabilities and Bayesian inference
- Dependent events. Dependent random values
- Worst / best case estimates of probabilities and random values
- Models of defence / protection
- Presenting results of risk analysis.
Teaching and Assessment
Assessment is coursework based consisting of a mixture of one or more of the following:
- peer reviews
- group work.
