Course overview

This course will introduce you to all the concepts you need to understand what makes a successful law firm. By understanding the goals of your practice, you will be able to communicate ideas and strategies effectively to colleagues and clients.

This course is designed for persons who must be ‘qualified to supervise’ – i.e. sole practitioners, managers of authorised bodies, and supervisors of those who undertake reserved work – it counts towards the SRA requirement that such persons undertake at least 12 hours of management skills training (rule 12 of SRA Practice Framework Rules 2011).

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • State best practice for delegating client work
  • Distinguish motivating and demotivating behavior by managers
  • State best practice rules for giving effective feedback to others
  • Run an effective appraisal meeting

Managing finance

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Analyse profit/loss accounts and balance sheets
  • Assess the financial health of a law firm
  • Analyse the profitability of different departments
  • Prepare a work breakdown summary and timeline for a case or transaction
  • Prepare a fee quote based on this summary and timeline
