Fundamental Clinical Skills – General Wound Care Course overview
This study day will ensure that you are up to date in understanding wound healing, wound assessment, and the management of a wide range of wounds. It will enhance the care you are able to deliver by ensuring your skills and knowledge are maintained, developed and up to date.
It will enable further clinical skills progression and allow you to move on to other programmes of education if desired.

This wound care management course will benefit practitioners who work regularly with wounds and wish to extend their knowledge and skills. This includes, but is not limited to, nurses, nursing associates, Healthcare Support Workers and paramedics.

What will I learn?
The course will cover the following topics:
- the physiology of wound healing
- wound assessment
- an overview of acute and chronic wounds
- wound cleansing
- wound dressings
- acute wounds: surgical wounds, traumatic wounds, burns
- chronic wounds: leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, fungating wounds
- wound care workshop: removal of sutures and staples and application of Steristrips
- peer formative assessment: principles of aseptic dressing technique (additional opportunity).

As well as the opportunity for learning, you will be able to network with other practitioners in attendance. There is a practical workshop included.

Anyone working with wounds may take this course, whether you're a registered nurse or a Healthcare Support Worke (HCSW) in primary care or secondary care.
