Course overview

This course has been designed to meet the needs of nurses requiring an introduction to ear care in addition to nurses requring an update. The course is available as follows:

Ear Care - Foundations for Practice (CS6034a) Next session: 30 October 2018

An overview of the anatomy and physiology of the ear.   The correct method to perform ear examination using an otoscope.  Client assessment and integration of the national ear care guidelines. Practical sessions will include ear examination using otoscopes and the use of a recommended ear irrigator.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6034b) Next session: 22 November 2018

Revision of the anatomy and physiology of the ear. Review of client assessment and common presenting conditions including infection and cerumen impaction. Best practice update, including NICE and national ear care guidelines.  Review of the correct method to perform ear examination using an otoscope, undertake ear irrigation, and perform aural toilet. Practical sessions will include ear examination using otoscopes and the use of a recommended ear irrigator.

The correct technique to examine the ear and the ability to identify landmarks of the pinna and tympanic membrane.  The course will provide a comprehensive overview of the national ear care guidelines and how these guidelines are applied in clinical practice, when presented with a client for ear irrigation. It involves the opportunity to practice otoscopy, ear irrigation and aural toilet under supervision.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6034b) Next session: 22 November 2018

The course will provide a comprehensive review of the national ear care guidelines and any other relevant clinical updates. It provides an opportunity to revise the assessment process and includes an overview of common presenting problems beyond cerumen impaction. It involves the opportunity to practice otoscopy, ear irrigation and aural toilet under supervision to review technique.

Registered Nurses current on the NMC register.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6034b)

Registered Nurses current on the NMC register who have previously undertaken ear care training.

English requirements

Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.

The course tutor provides feedback to students on otoscopy technique as well the use of a recommended ear irrigator.
