Course overview

The day consists of a complete cytology update as required by the NHS Cervical Screening Programme and covers the following:

  • Cervical Screening Programmes and Annual Reviews and the impact of new research taking place relating to new initiatives in sample taking.
  • A refresher in anatomy and physiology of the cervix to aid understanding.
  • Taking cervical samples in relation to health and safety, infection control, and confidentiality.
  • The outcomes of taking cervical samples in relation to inadequacy rates and what we can do to reduce them.
  • HPV and the impact on testing and its relation to cancer and warts
  • What happens in the laboratory and what information is require in relation to completing the HMR101 request/reporting form and fail safe initiatives to ensure safe practice.
  • An insight in colposcopy if a woman needs treatment.
  • What is normal and what do we need to know when taking a cervical sample? Many pictures are shown to highlight the normal and abnormal cervix.
  • Cervical Quiz- test yourself on your knowledge and have some fun.

You will receive a certificate of attendance that can be used as part of your:
-CPD requirement (35 hours of Continuing professional development in the past 3 years)
-NMC registration (and from the end of 2015 it can be used for revalidation)
-NHS Cervical Screening Programme for sample takers 3 yearly update requirement

Prerequisite knowledge

Applicants must be a registered nurse and have experience as cervical sample takers. Please note upon booking your place, you will be contacted to confirm your NMC pin number.

English requirements

Applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.

  • Val McMunn

    Val McMunn is a qualified nurse, midwife, teacher, Independent nurse prescriber and is employed as a lecturer at City, University of London in contraception, sexual health and cytology.

    Val holds an MSc in Public Health, a Post Graduate Certificate in Sexual health as is an Associate of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and holds a letter of competence for intra uterine techniques and subdermal Implants.

    She currently works clinically within contraception/sexual health services where she maintains her clinical skills and knowledge.
