Wearth London

Wearth London is an E-commerce marketplace platform connecting consumers with independent sustainable and ethical UK brands.

Briefly explain your business/business concept and the problem it aims to solve:

Wearth London is an E-commerce marketplace platform connecting consumers with independent sustainable and ethical UK brands.

UK consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of the environmental and ethical consequences of what they are buying including the amount of plastic, the carbon emissions of the product as well as worker rights/conditions. In light of this growing awareness, new brands have launched in the UK which are sustainable and ethically-minded. Brands, for instance, which make their products in the UK and use plastic-free packaging. However, high street and online retailers have not responded to these changes in consumer demand. This is a problem for consumers as it is more difficult for them to find products which align with their values. At the same time it limits retail opportunities for the new brands, therefore reducing their potential for success.

We aim to solve this problem and help promote eco-friendly and ethical shopping in the UK by developing a platform where consumers can more easily discover brands which align with their values, whilst creating an innovative stage for these like-minded independent brands to reach a larger customer base and grow.

How did you come up with this idea?

The idea for Wearth came about a year ago as we wanted to do more to protect the environment by creating a modern website which changes the perception around green shopping. We wanted to demonstrate to people that you can shop consciously without having to compromise on quality or style.

By doing this we believe we can make this niche market more mainstream, especially considering the growing awareness from UK consumers with 53% of shoppers in the UK saying they feel better when they buy products that are sustainably produced.

What stage is your business currently at, and what are your plans moving forward?

We have spent the last year researching brands which met our criteria and we launched with 20 brands at the end of October 2017. Now we have over 30 brands across a range of product categories. Our departments include natural beauty products, ethical jewellery made from recycled silver and handmade sustainable furniture with every piece made in the UK using reclaimed wood.

Our plans moving forward are to first establish Wearth as the go to platform in the country to shop consciously. We have already had lots of international interest as well and we would

like to eventually set up national platforms across the world which partners with the best brands local to that area. We believe that Wearth can be a global brand which helps reduce our collective impact on the environment whilst supporting independent brands.

What do you feel are your three biggest successes with your business so far?

Our first biggest success was creating a contemporary easy-to-use website which makes it easy for our customers to explore the brands that we have. Within this website, we have also created a new innovative way of shopping where our customers can use our shop by values page to discover products which have certain values, e.g. plastic-free, recycled materials and made in the UK.

The second biggest success is partnering with over 30 amazing UK brands who have really got behind what we want to achieve and see the benefit of being on our platform.

How has being a student at City helped you to develop your idea?

City are very encouraging in their support for students to explore turning their entrepreneurial ideas into reality. It is the expert advice from the enterprise team and the opportunities to meet other young entrepreneurs who are going through similar things to you which has really helped develop the idea.

What one piece of advice would you give to aspiring entrepreneurial students at City?

Take the opportunities to engage in City’s enterprise community and remember that at some stage you will have to take a leap of faith, but at least as a city student there is a great network to help where possible.
