PhD Title: Contemporary Composition in Iran: Creative, Social and Political Exchange

Supervisor: Dr. Laudan Nooshin

Overview and research interests

This research will consider a new movement in contemporary classical composition in Iran, whose members combine elements of Iranian classical music – a microtonal, improvisation based system that draws on the memorisation of approximately 400 modally-organised melodies – with instruments, structures and ideas from Anglo-European art music. This research will consider the social, political and aesthetic implications of such an artistic process and explore how this relates to the political reality in which many of these composers reside: an Iran which, since the 1979 revolution, has vacillated between positions of isolation and tentative openness in its political, economic, diplomatic and cultural dealings with Europe and the United States.
