Graduation 2021 FAQ

Will the January 2021 physical Graduation ceremonies still go ahead? (COVID-19 pandemic)

No. In light of the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the University has decided that it is not possible for the graduation ceremonies to go ahead as scheduled in January. Students will be invited to virtual graduation ceremonies in January and further information and instructions on how to receive your certificate will be sent to all affected students.

My graduation ceremony (January 20211) has been cancelled. How do I receive my certificate?

Certificates will be sent to you in the post. Further information will be sent in the coming weeks.

What do I do if I can't join in the virtual ceremony?

We understand that some students may not be able to attend due to restrictions, time zones and internet signal. If you know you won’t be able to attend in advance, please let us know when you are asked to register. You will still be able to watch the live stream of the event or alternatively watch the ceremony when it is uploaded to the City website after it has taken place.

What can I expect from the Virtual Graduation Ceremony?

Students will be invited by email to book their place. You’ll be allocated to a ceremony date and time and given instructions for how to access the ceremony on the day.You will join a Zoom room with other graduates on your course, to give you the opportunity to celebrate with your peers. The ceremony will follow a similar format as our usual face to face ceremony. You will watch some speeches and you can expect your name to be read out live. When your name is read, you to be visible to everyone on screen at that point, to acknowledge your achievement.Guests will be able to watch the live stream of the event. This link will be sent out closer to the event date. The event will be recorded to view later on the City website.

Can I invite guests to my virtual ceremony?

Yes. We encourage you to get your friends and family involved. The event will be streamed live so they can all watch it too, and it will also be recorded to watch afterwards. This link will be sent out closer to the event date. Please note: your guests will not join by your Zoom link, they will be watching elsewhere.

Do we need to wear academic dress?

Staff and students ‘attending’ will be asked to wear smart dress but academic dress will not be required. If you do want to order a gown, our gown supplier is Ede & Ravenscroft:

  • 3. Proceed to the checkout

What software will I need to join the virtual graduation ceremony?

The virtual graduation ceremonies will be streamed live available to family and friends to view, and students will be invited to join in via Zoom. Zoom is free software which you can access here and sign in using your City email and password. The Zoom link is for students only; guests will view the live stream for else where. Please do not share your Zoom like with anyone as this is personalised to you.

Will there still be an in person ceremony and when will this be?

We hope to be able to host an in person ceremony in the future. Unfortunately, we can’t give you an exact date right now as to when we will be able to invite you to an in person ceremony. This is because we don’t know when the restrictions on gatherings and the current guidance on safety measures will enable us to do so. However, as soon as it is safe for us to arrange a face to face celebration, we will contact you so you have the opportunity to attend.

If I attend a virtual ceremony, can I still attend an in-person ceremony?

Yes you will still be invited to an in-person ceremony with your Graduating class when this is safe to go ahead.
