CREWS was an EU-funded Framework IV 21903 long-term reactive research project into scenario-based requirements engineering. It had 4 academic partners and a steering committee of leading industrial practitioners. Key research results included natural language parsing of text scenarios and scenario-driven goal modelling, eliciting requirements using multi-media techniques, and scenario animation for formal requirement specifications.
At the Centre for HCI Design, we developed new methods and software prototypes for acquiring and validating system requirements in a systematic way. Key features of this research included:
- a critical distinction between use cases and scenarios;
- Methods for discovering socio-technical system requirements from use cases;
- Taxonomies of alternative behaviours with which to discover requirements;
- A simple language for specifying use cases;
- A prototype which automatically generates scenarios from use cases;
- A prototype which automatically generates scenario alternative courses;
- Guided scenarios walkthroughs;
- Patterns for automatic scenario-requirement cross-checking.
Results from this research have been published widely and are also delivered through the CREWS-SAVRE method and software prototype. CREWS-SAVRE was evaluated in the SERPS project with Marconi Naval Systems. CREWS-SAVRE's scenario generation and walkthrough methods and tools are the platform for the ART-SCENE prototype being developed as part of the SIMP project.
