The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) has been placing students with a range of employers for over 20 years. We aim to provide a bespoke and comprehensive service to employers seeking to offer short to long term work experience to those studying at City.
Types of placement
At City, we offer a number of pathways in which a student can undertake some form of work-based learning.
One-year sandwich placements – All undergraduates are encouraged to complete a one-year placement or summer internship as part of their course.
The schemes below are specific to our undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Department of Computer Science
- Professional Pathway Scheme - Unique to City, this initiative allows an undergraduate to work for up to four days a week whilst completing their degree
- Postgraduate internship scheme - Postgraduate students are encouraged to complete an internship as part of their dissertation. Our Information for Internship Providers document gives the basics of the scheme.
The PLU is always keen to hear from employers that are interested in discussing alternative pathways for students to undertake professional experience, including opportunities for project work.

Benefits of offering a placement at City
There are many advantages of recruiting a placement student or intern from City. We provide comprehensive guidelines and additional support throughout the placement process from conception to completion.
Placements are fixed term and there is no requirement for you to offer work extending past this period. Placement students and interns offer a valuable resource for a fraction of the cost of a graduate.
Our students will bring high level technical skills, knowledge, enthusiasm, objectivity and new ideas to your organisation. Hiring a student will allow you to build stronger, mutually beneficial links with academia and the world class research at City, University of London.

How the PLU supports placements
The PLU supports students and employers throughout the placement to make sure that both parties are benefiting effectively from the experience.
Each placement student is assigned a work-based learning advisor (WLA) who will provide assistance throughout the duration of the placement by visiting the workplace and ensuring that both the student and placement provider are meeting the pre-agreed deliverables.
