Development Assessment and Intervention Research in Speech and Language Group

The group has explored the identification, impact and treatment of developmental language disorders. Early years studies have developed assessment and diagnostic tools, and have investigated how very early processing skills may affect language, social communication and literacy in school age children. A further theme is the relationship between language and social disadvantage.

Research from the group has generated novel insights into the long term consequences of language impairment, e.g., by exploring impacts in adolescence and young adulthood. Interventions to support language learning in secondary age children and young people have also been explored.

The group has attracted funding from the ESRC, the Department of Education, the Department for International Development, the Nuffield Foundation, the Communication Trust, and the Redbridge, and Barking and Dagenham local authorities (total value: £500,000).
