General research interests
I am an Audiologist and am happy to supervise any projects with an audiological theme. My research interests include acoustics and noise induced hearing loss. Cochlear hair cell damage from excessive noise exposure primarily affects certain frequencies in the hearing range (3-6 kHz). Workers at special risk of hearing damage are usually those in heavy industry, but recreational noise induced hearing loss from noisy nightclubs and MP3 players is on the increase.
I am also interested in the psychoacoustics of the normal and impaired ear. An understanding of the frequency range and resolution, loudness growth and speech discrimination in normal and impaired ears informs hearing aid selection and fitting.

- Noise exposure levels from personal stereosThe Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 came into force on 6 April 2006 and superseded the Noise at Work Regulations 1989. The new regulations stipulate lower maximum levels of exposure over a daily and weekly period. MP3 players and other personal stereos are in common use and there have been a number of papers suggesting that the noise exposure levels in the enclosed ear canal are sufficient to cause damage to the auditory system over time, Clark 1990, Meyer-Bich, 1996. The student would measure the noise levels from personal stereos, using a sound level meter and mock-up artificial ear, for a large number of individuals selected at random from outside the front of the college, and from this calculate their daily/weekly noise exposure using a questionnaire to estimate their time of exposure. Compared to that stipulated in the regulations.
- Assessment of the benefits of bilateral cochlear implantation (Library based project)
Bilateral cochlear implantation has been used for the treatment of profound bilateral sensori-neural hearing loss in adults and children. The study would aim to assess the benefits of bilateral v unilateral cochlear implantation in adults and children.
The student would:
Conduct a literature review.
Discuss the criteria for bilateral cochlear implantation.
Compare criteria used within each study to determine effective bilateral implant provision considering aetiology, age and sequence of implantation.
Discuss the functional benefit to binaural hearing of bilateral cochlear implantation.
Compare assessment methods used to define effective treatment outcomes.
