Guest Speakers

The Department of Sociology and Criminology and the Jeremy Tunstall Global Media Research Centre in particular regularly invite speakers from within the industry. With past speakers coming from companies such as CNBC, Eurosport, FremantleMedia and regulatory agencies such as OFCOM, the academia (recent speakers Robert Picard, Cees Hamelink, Daya Thussu, Peter Kingstone, Haim Bresheeth and Patrick Barwise), as well as journalism (Ivor Gaber, Nicholas Jones). These well-attended talks are primarily addressed to our MA and PhD students, but are open to all.

Conference organisation

C. Matos has organised the following recent conferences:

  • Postgraduate Conference for the MA in International Communications and Development January 2016. Held at City University in January 2016, with guest speakers and participation of scholars and practioners from Westminist University, LSE, Goldsmiths and University of Reading.

P. Iosifidis has organised the following recent conferences:

  • Global Media and Communication, December 2013. The conference was accompanied with launch of the Palgrave Global Media Policy and Business Series
  • Public Service Broadcasting in the Era of Austerity with Jean Chalaby, June 2013
  • The Public Sphere and Social Networks, September 2012
  • Global Media Policy, September 2011. The conference was accompanied with the launch of the research monograph Global Media and Communication Policy
  • The Public Sphere and Public Service Communications, April 2010. The conference was accompanied with the launch of the edited book Reinventing Public Service Communication: European Broadcasters and Beyond
  • Digital Economy and Social Inclusion, EPSRC-funded, March 2009

In 2010 D. Mercea was programme chair of the Information, Communication & Society (iCS) symposium Networking Democracy: New Media Innovations in Participatory Politics. The event was hosted by the BabeÅŸ-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and co-organised by the Department of Sociology, University of York, UK and the Faculty of European Studies at the BabeÅŸ-Bolyai University.

Journals and Book Series

An international journal and a Book Series support the Centre's activities.

  • The International Journal of Digital Television (Intellect), edited by P. Iosifidis, publishes comparative and interdisciplinary work on a wide range of topics such as  switching off analogue TV, the challenge of exploiting digital television's convergence with the Internet and telecommunications, broadcasting's audience in the digital age, the future of public service television in an all-digital environment.
  • The Palgrave Media Policy and Business Book Series,  co-edited by P. Iosifidis, J. Steemers and G. Sussman, examines the wider social, political, economic and technological changes arising from the globalisation of the media and communications industries and assesses their impact on matters of business practice, regulation and policy.
