About City

Student profile: Helene De Chalambert

What course are you on?

BSc Media Studies and Sociology (final year)

Where are you from?

I am half French, half Greek.

What is the best thing about studying in London?

One thing is that you meet students and academics who come from different parts of the world, which makes studying an even more rewarding and fulfilling experience. Another thing is the accessibility to resources; having libraries 'at your door step' makes everything easier.

Why did you choose your course?

I wanted to do 'media studies' but it was important for me to gain a wider theoretical understanding of social issues and media processes within society.

Why did you choose to study it at City?

I chose City, University of London because the conjoint study of Sociology and Media was an option that is not often available at Undergraduate level. Also, City's location and the fact that it attracts International students were important factors in my choice.

What's your favourite topic within your study area?

It's hard to tell because I think that all topics taught on the course are complementary, but my main interest is in media theory and research on news coverage of 'terrorism'.

If you could give one bit of advice to a prospective City student, what would it be?

Be present and persistent, and don't worry about not knowing something; that's what you're here for. Also, try to keep a level of consistency throughout your studies; the first and second years will build the foundations for your third year and (perhaps) your future studies.

What are your plans after graduating from City?

I want to conduct media research in the future, so I am currently applying for research courses in 'Media and Communications' at postgraduate level.

What are your interests outside of your course?

I used to work as a textile designer before coming to City, so illustration has remained a big part of my interests. I also spend considerable time practicing Yoga because it helps me calm my anxieties and find a balance between my studies and my personal life.
