Thesis title: Towards a Professional Learning Dialogue in Mexican Contemporary Art Museums

Supervisor: Professor Victoria Woollard

Overview and research interests

Patricia's thesis explores the concept of learning dialogue and argues that dialogue between the museum and the audience promotes balanced opportunities to express ideas and information, where both audiences and the museum potentially learn, and the staff inform their future practice to become more inclusive. The study uses interviews and content analysis research methods, and a theoretical framework related to learning, dialogue and participation to analyse the Mexican contemporary art museums' practice.

The thesis investigates the case study of the Enlaces programme, at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MuAC), where university students are trained to create further dialogue with audiences with the purpose of provoking questions, reflection and understanding of the artwork. Furthermore, the research findings reveal the existence of different types of dialogues, which support the proposal of a professional learning dialogue model that enables to promote shared practice amongst staff members.
