Summary of current doctoral research

This doctoral research explores the changing cultural and creative geography of London arising due to the lack of affordable accommodation and studios for artists in London. Cheap warehouses in cities have a tradition of being places for creative and artistic people as they have often been low cost with plenty of open space. Often these artistic communities and individuals have been linked by shared college days, group shows and projects and have been formed in relation to the local community and meeting places in which they live, contributing to local distinctiveness and cultural identity. In the face of severe restrictions on affordable accommodation and studio space, this research asks whether artists are finding new spaces to live and create, and whether new media provides a means of retaining community links beyond the physical space as artists work within a global context.
