Instrumental Cultural Policy, Social Objectives and the Governance of Contemporary Visual Arts Organisations

Charlotte’s PhD research explores instrumental cultural policies during the New Labour period. In particular, the research examines how contemporary art organisations in London operated in the late 1990s and early 2000s, within a cultural policy context that was defined by its emphasis on social value, and its articulation of the museum as an agent of social change. The research employs quantitative and qualitative methods to explore the potential impact of cultural policies on institutional practices and contributes to debates about the social value of art and culture.
