Strategy, diplomacy and decision-making

This is a highly participative and experiential module. It builds upon subjects offered in Term 1, both in Global Political Economy and International Politics, to explore practical approaches to the formulation of policy options, decision-making and negotiation within organisations and between competing parties.

You will be introduced to strategies and techniques employed in real life. Through scenario-building exercises, comparative analysis of contrasting narratives, debate and simulations you will be encouraged to experiment with different ways of defining problems, reconciling competing agendas, facilitating dialogue and mitigating risk.

The intention is to enable you to identify constructive ways of taking on some of the challenges surrounding decision making and diplomacy that you can expect to encounter in the work place.

Specifically, the objectives are to:
  1. Develop an understanding of the decision-making processes used within organisations
  2. Build awareness of how an organisation's external and internal environments can influence the perceptions and behaviours of decision makers
  3. Develop an appreciation of how interventions and diplomacy can either exacerbate or mitigate conflict
  4. Introduce and practise techniques that help groups, organisations and their leaders to manage complexity, uncertainty and ambiguity.

Topics include: approaches to strategic decision-making; understanding organisational behaviour; managing change and ambiguity; 'Track Two' diplomacy; conflict mediation; and political risk analysis.
