Global capitalism: past, present, future

In this module you will be introduced to the key historical stages in the global evolution of capitalism, its institutions and its structures.

Focusing on national and regional variations of capitalist organisation, you will be able to critically examine and compare different modes of state-market interaction, and engage with policy dilemmas associated with the rise of, and shifts in, transnational markets.

The module is built around a balance of historical and empirical study of global political economy, and analyses of practical issues such as the challenges of global governance, industrialisation, economic growth and financialisation, and the global environment.

By the end of the module, you should feel confident with the core themes and history of post-war global political economy.

The topics we will cover include:

  • globalization before 20th century
  • the Great Depression
  • the Bretton Woods era
  • varieties of capitalism
  • the rise of BRICs and new powers
  • financial crises
  • ecology and capitalism.
