This course enabled me to learn about a broad field of clinical topics that I can put into practise on a daily basis
Please tell us about your background prior to starting the course?
I first studied optometry in Spain. I qualified in 2014 and since then I have been practising in Madrid, and now in the UK.
What were your main motivations to apply for this course?
I always wanted to come to the UK to continue my studies. City, University of London was very welcoming and the MSc Clinical Optometry programme director, Michelle Hennelly, met with me to help me through the enrolment process and address all of my doubts.
What were, if any, the main challenges that affected your decision about postgraduate study? How did you overcome them?
As an international student, the main challenges were meeting the English language requirement and getting used to a completely different evaluation system, but thanks to the support of the teaching staff and studying hard, I overcame them.
Why did you choose to study at City, University of London?
I found the MSc Clinical Optometry programme very interesting. You not only receive the MSc qualification but professional certificates from some of the modules as well.
How studying a postgraduate degree has helped you develop personally and professionally?
I have been able to engage with people from different backgrounds who have different points of view such as nurses, orthoptists and optometrists working in different settings. This has helped me widen my own perspective and become a better professional.
What opportunities and experiences City has offered you during your course?
I was proud to be the MSc Student Representative and be able to help other students like me.
What are your career plans, and how has City helped you prepare for the next stage in your career journey?
As an Optometrist, I need to keep my knowledge development up to date. This course enabled me to learn about a broad field of clinical topics that I can put into practise on a daily basis, It has also helped me identify which areas I would like to specialise in.
What advice would you give to people thinking about studying this course?
The MSc in Clinical Optometry is ideal for professional Optometrists who want to broaden their knowledge while working. The programme is tailored in such a way that it can be combined with daily work, as you have access to online resources and recorded lectures. I would advise people to contact the Admissions Team if they are interested in the course, as they will be able to answer any of your questions.
