Tasneem is a 2nd year BSc Optometry student. After graduation, she would like to work with charities, providing eye care to those in need.
What were you doing before you came to study at City?
Before coming to study at City, I completed A-levels in Biology, Psychology and Economics at a college in East London.
Why did you decide to apply to study at City, University of London?
I decided to study at City for several reasons. It is close to where I currently live and so the commute is simple. There are numerous accessible train stations located around the University. Another reason was the atmosphere on campus: after attending an Open Day at City, I found that the students and staff were friendly, and the various societies open to me were really appealing. I instantly knew that this was where I wanted to further my education.
What is your favourite thing about studying at City?
For Optometry we have a lot of labs where we are taught essential practical skills and can practice in order to improve our skills. I enjoy these labs a lot as they provide a great opportunity to understand the theory learnt in lectures and get hands on experience. There is a wide range of equipment available for us to use, which prepares us for examinations and our future careers.
What kind of things are you involved in outside of your course?
I am a Marketing Student Ambassador at City. Through this, I meet lots of new people and am also able to refine and enhance my skills. This will be very beneficial for me in the future when applying for jobs. It is also a very good way of earning some money whilst studying as it does not interfere with my studying time and allows me to work with flexibility.
What do you plan to do after you graduate?
I would like to start working as a pre-registration optometrist. Once I have completed this training, I will be a fully-qualified optometrist. Then, at some point soon, I plan to work with charities such as Vision Aid and contribute to providing eye care to those in need.
What would be your top tip for our applicants?
Spend time on your personal statements as this is where you make your first and most important impression. Research optometry and pinpoint the reason why you want this to be your future career.
